Good Friday

Since we hear about the crucifixion so many times we tend to get used to hearing about it. To keep it in perspective, I always try to make it more real by remembering it more specifically. In the Gospels we're told that at about 9AM Jesus was crucified by the Roman soldiers, at Noon the sun stopped shining, and at 3PM Jesus cried out "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Soon after that Jesus died and was buried by sundown on Friday. If you want to read what the Bible has to say about Friday's events look at John 19:16-42 and Matthew 27:27-61.

It's definitely a sad day to remember Jesus' death for us, but we know that Sunday He conquers death and is Alive again. We have the benefit of having the whole Bible today. But remember, the disciples back then still didn't completely get it. When Jesus was arrested and crucified, the disciples were shocked, certainly overcome with grief at the loss of their friend and leader, and probably afraid that the same thing might happen to them. Sometimes it's good to imagine ourselves in their position. Just think about how incredibly overcome with joy they were when they saw Jesus alive again on Sunday.

I pray that you have some time this weekend to spend reading about what happened more than 2000 years ago, and I hope it becomes real for you in a way that fills you with unspeakable joy.
